In practice, it is quite common to have at least 10 years' worth of positive adult experience (the average for this study of 70 years). Given the complexity of this issue, the current approach to policy is not ideal: rather than a one-size-fits-all approach to benefit payments, the UK is in a position to have the highest level of positive adult experience for older people.

The research used a mixture of approaches. Most relevant were two key methods, the 'obstacle principle' (an approach taken by the UK government) and the'referral principle'. The 'obstacle principle' means that we must be careful not to let too much money into the system into our benefit system. People who have a great deal of active time should be entitled to receive a generous income boost, while those whose active time levels are less active are better off off with a lower allowance. The reverse is also true: those who have more active time tend to have a poor income and this benefits those with a high age at work. The'referral principle' is more pragmatic: the more useful information you provide to the system, the more you should benefit, so for example, if a person has less than 5 years' active time, they would not receive a significant amount of financial benefit unless they could explain in more detail why this.

The research took place between 2006 and 2011 on 2,063 people aged 55 to 70 years (the participants were recruited from the working-age population). We identified their age, year and their job role at the start of the study, the age at which they were eligible for the benefit and where they live. Using a random sample of the population, we chose to split our study into two: 'active' and 'non-active'. The non-active participants would have been the pensioners for whom the 'obstacle principle' was applied, while the active participants would have been the pensioners for whom the'referral principle' was applied. After each sample we asked people to complete a questionnaire to get details of their time use and use of benefits. These included how many hours a day were spent on different activities – from watching TV to driving – and whether they used benefits and were also regularly in contact with others. We used information obtained by the Census about household size and household income to create an account of the people who had experienced high levels of positive adult experience during the 10-year follow-up period, in which time they were added to the sample.
